Toy Design for Kids with Learning Disabilties

Project Overview

Upon conducting further research, I was able to understand the importance of a toy in a child’s physical and mental development. It was clear that toys aids in the expanding creativity of child and helps develop their cognitive functions. I also found that 2.5% of children in the UK are suffering from the effects of learning disability which creates a demand for LD supporting toys. In addition, I was able to connect the most common types with of LDs with their preferred learning styles. This led me to certain toys and technologies used within toys which helps with Dyspraxia and ADHD. This inspired my design stage and eventually my final output. Finally, I was able to look into ways which helps promote sustainability within my final products and take them into consideration.

Product Lifecycle

Materials, Manufacture, Use and Disposal (Circular Economy)

Material Production
Basket and floorboard will be manufactured from PLA, a bio-plastic synthesized from biomass. Biomass is a renewable recourse mostly compromised of corn starch and other high starch crops. Other components such as the wheels, shaft, fittings and electrical components will all be off the shelf. Emissions: Co2, CH4, N2O.

Production Manufacturing
The basket and floor board will be injection moulded. Components will use non permanent fixtures so it can be dismantled and reused or recycled. A low waste manufacturing method. Any waste at this stage can be immediately recycled. Emissions: Co2, CH4, N2O.

Product Use
During use the product will use electrical energy to power the motors. This will be provided through cylindrical cell lithium batteries. Emissions: N/A.

Product Disposal
At end of life the product can be disassembled and recycled or reused in its separate parts. PLA will go to compost and electrical components recycled. Emissions: Co2, CH4, N2O.
