Project Overview

Background Information

Additive Manufacturing is one of the uprising technologies which addresses issues such as rapid prototyping, fabrication of complex geometries, and resources and waste management during the current age of Industry 4.0. In this post, I will further explain what 3D printing is and what are the current technologies used nowadays. I will also expand further into the types of components used in one of the most used 3D printing technology - Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM).

Advantages of Using Additive Manufacturing:

3D printing provides a variety of advantages in comparison to traditional manufacturing techniques. The following are some of the benefits of utilizing additive manufacturing:

1. Design Flexibility

2. Faster Prototyping and Production

3. Reduced Waste

4. Cost-Effective for Small Production Runs

Project Brief:

As part of my Digital Manufacturing unit assignment, a company called "Phones-R-Us"(Fictional Company) which specializes in producing modular mobile devices is looking for a new manufacturer who can produce the top casing piece required for their existing mobile phones. There original supplier responsible for delivering this part is no longer in business and the company is looking into alternative companies with new and advanced production methods while ensuring the required part is of the same, if not better, quality and finish wish while complying with their standards and existing assembly line.
